Ellen Franzén is the Best Sommelier in Sweden 2021. She was awarded this title last week in Stockholm. Born in Sweden and now head sommelier at 2 Michelin starred Gastrologik in Stockholm, this extraordinary woman tells us about her career and approach to sommellerie. Gastrologik is of course a luxury restaurant, but it’s also small and cozy restaurant. Our aim is that everyone should feel relaxed when they are guest with us, so I think it’s important that the wine is never masterful.

1.     Hello Ellen, how does it feel to be elected the best sommelier in Sweden again [ruling champion from 2019]?

It’s truly a great feeling, but also a relief- after a year when the world has been up side down and inspiration has been hard to get, it’s feels extra good to still be able to perform

2.     How did You prepare for the competition? I’ve heard that some sommeliers on the really high international level prepare themselves like a professional athlete?

Yeah, I would say a part of it is true. I always puts extra focus on running the last weeks before competition, both to clear my head but also cause I know how exhausting a long final can be. But of course it’s a lot of hour studying, flash cards, blind tasting every day (even when I was home, sick in Covid) and some practical training
