Pandemic and financial worries marked parts of last year. But never before have the wine houses in Champagne sold their bubbly drink for as much money as in 2022. [read the full champagne story]

Sales rose to roughly 6 billion euros, corresponding to roughly 66 billion sek, a new record. One reason is believed to be that more customers bought more expensive older vintage bottles.

‘Consumers around the world rejoiced at the end of the lockdowns and got the taste to go out and celebrate and travel again,’

David Chatillon, head of the Comité Champagne, said in a statement.

A total of 326 million bottles of bubbly were sold from the region, of which 187.5 million were shipped outside France’s borders.

Despite the fact that exports to Russia were completely stopped, exports went up overall, and last year accounted for 57 percent of all sales.
