Verzy

Founded in 1938 by Cécile and Roger Mouzon. Today, they work with 60 individual locations in Verzy from 9 hectares in an organic way with both hens and sheep in the vineyards. The vineyards are dominated by Pinot Noir, but in addition to Chardonnay, you actually have a few percent of all rare grape varieties that are allowed in Champagne. The wines ferment for a short time in oak barrels and are never filtered. Today, they make brilliant champagnes with a high personality and a strong terroir imprint. A grower to follow closely. * Biodynamically cultivated since 2008, certified by Demeter * Application of agroforestry practices with more than 700 trees and shrubs planted on the vineyard blocks and more than 300 aromatic plants (Thyme, Oregano, Savory, Mint, etc.) * Varieties: 60% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 5% Arbane, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier & Petit Meslier

Mouzon Leroux ‘L´Atavique’

(2020-base)

80(75)p

65pn 35ch

TASTING NOTE Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin – Formerly called Tradition and still the standard champagne in the portfolio. Impressed with the same extreme chalky purity and precision as the vineyard wines from this eminent producer. It is a little lighter and shorter, however, it is definitely.

Mouzon Leroux ‘L´Ascendant’

(2019-base)

87(86)p

60pn 40ch

TASTING NOTE Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin – Half from 2019 and solera down to 2014 in barrels without dosage. Nice personal aroma with unique spice. This bouquet is dominated by sweet pastries, cinnamon and vanilla. The taste is instead very fresh and sparkling, almost flint and macadamia chalky. Despite its youth, hardly worth storing for a very long time as the style from the start is highly satisfactory.

2019 Mouzon Leroux ‘L´Opiniâtre

91(88)p

100ch

TASTING NOTE Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin – Pure Verzy Grand cru chardonnay without either sulfur or dosage. Light color and extremely lively behavior. Delicate and beautiful aroma profile both in aroma and taste. Rich and silky texture with salty minerality and nice village-typical length.

TASTING NOTE Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin – All 7 grape varieties!! Pure Verzy Grand cru from all 7 grape varieties with 1 gram dosage. Really awesome and probably the very best champagne made from all of Champagne’s grape varieties. I was mainly struck by how the different grape varieties took turns dominating at different temperatures and with time in the glass. A little tied from the start, but harmony between the seven. After a while, the pear notes from the pinot blanc took over, before the grassiness and nettles of the petit meslier felt extra strong to end in more classic pinot noir garb. It was an incredibly exciting journey in itself, but I still find that I prefer the grower’s other wines.

2019 Mouzon Leroux ‘L´Angelique

91(88)p

100pn

TASTING NOTE Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin – Famous and rare blanc de blancs from Verzy. Brilliantly good and even better than previous versions of this fine wine. It shows how skilled Sebastien and his team are. Nervous and crystal clear, with a unique terroir tone of flint elegance and oyster shell.

2019 Mouzon Leroux ‘L´Ineffable

93(92)p

100pn

TASTING NOTE Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin – Pure Pinot Noir from Verzy without dosage. Again a fantastic wine! So crazy intensely fragrant and so clean. A kind of archetypal terroir caricature of Verzy. Extremely powdery mineral-driven with freshly ground raw deer saddle, anchovies, anchovies, pencil lead and extremely surprisingly a soft sophisticated creamy smultron flavor emerges beneath the minerality. The aftertaste plays again on the mineral theme and is so, so long.
