The Power of the Dark Grape: Introducing the Top-100 Blanc de Noirs for 2025

While the elegance of Chardonnay often steals the spotlight, the true muscle, soul, and gastronomic depth of Champagne reside in the dark-skinned grapes—Pinot Noir and Meunier. A Blanc de Noirs is a study in structure; it is a wine that trades floral lace for red-fruit weight, savory tension, and an almost tactile vinous character. These are the Champagnes for the dinner table, the ones that possess the “shoulders” to stand up to the richest holiday feasts.

This year, the Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin reached a new peak of critical rigor. To distill this definitive ranking, we tasted a monumental 1,121 unique Champagnes. From the legendary Grandes Marques to the most obsessive grower-producers in the Montagne de Reims and the Aube, every bottle was tested for its balance, its potential, and its ability to express the raw power of the red grape.

A Duel of Titans: Selosse, Bollinger, and Egly-Ouriet

The 2025 list is a testament to the absolute mastery of three names that define the “Black Grape” category:

• Jacques Selosse: Taking the top spot with the legendary Sous Le Mont Mareuil-sur-Aÿ R.P 05 (Score 98), Selosse continues to push the boundaries of oxidative complexity and terroir expression.
• Bollinger: The Vieilles Vignes Françaises (VVF) 2016 (Score 97) remains the gold standard for pure, pre-phylloxera Pinot Noir power—a wine of immense concentration and historical weight.
• Egly-Ouriet: Francis Egly’s dominance is staggering, occupying four of the top ten spots with various bases of his Blanc de Noirs Vieilles Vignes. These wines are the ultimate expressions of Ambonnay’s sunshine and chalk, offering a vinous intensity that rivals the greatest red Burgundies.

Lower down the list, we see exciting entries from Nicolas Maillart, Thierry Perrion, and Paul Bara, proving that the art of the Blanc de Noirs is thriving across both historic houses and artisanal growers.
