There is a specific, crystalline magic found only in Blanc de Blancs. By stripping away the structural power of Pinot Noir and the fruit-forward charm of Meunier, the winemaker is left with the naked elegance of Chardonnay. It is a style that demands perfection; there is no place for flaws to hide behind a blend. Instead, we find the purest expression of the Champagne region’s chalky terroir—vibrant acidity, citrus precision, and that unmistakable saline minerality.

This year, the Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin undertook its most ambitious critical survey yet. To curate this definitive ranking, we tasted a staggering 1,121 unique Champagnes. From the historic cellars of the Grandes Marques to the experimental plots of the most sought-after growers, every bottle was scrutinized for its balance, longevity, and “soul.”

A Year of Icons and Artisans

The 2025 rankings underscore the sheer dominance of Jacques Selosse, occupying an incredible seven spots within the Top 10 alone. Anselme and Guillaume Selosse’s “Lieux-Dits” series—particularly Les Carelles—continues to redefine what complexity means for Chardonnay.

However, the very top of the podium belongs to two historic monuments: the 1985 Louise Pommery Vinothèque and the legendary 1988 Krug Clos du Mesnil. These scores of 99 serve as a reminder that while young Blanc de Blancs offers invigorating tension, only time can unlock the profound, honeyed, and toasted dimensions that make Chardonnay the true king of the cellar.
